SANAA, 27 Oct — Sanaa Special Court Tuesday sentenced to death four Zaydi Shiite suspects on convictions of “killing and wounding many soldiers and security officers and forming an armed gang to carry out a criminal.” This raises the number of Shiite rebels on death row to 26 and the court sentenced 11 others to prison terms ranging from 5 to 12 years. The 16th defendant was freed as the judge limited his term to jail time already served since he was arrested with the other defendants on June 2008. The group was the fifth batch of 190 members of the Shiite Faithful Youth organization who fought the government troops for about a month last year in Bani Hoshish, 20 miles north of the capital Sanaa. Upon hearing the verdict, the defendants chanted the rebels slogan: “God is great. Death to America. Death to Israel. May God’s curse befall the Jews. Victory to Islam.” On Tuesday, the same court also started the trial of another batch of Shiite insurgents. Meanwhile, Iran denied on Tuesday Yemeni reports of the seizure of an Iranian weapons-laden vessel allegedly destined for the Shiite rebels in north Yemen. The Tehran-based Arabic satellite TV channel Tuesday quoted “informed Iranian sources,” as saying “no Iranian vessel delivering weapons to the rebels was stopped,” dubbing the reports as “media fabrication.” On Monday, several news outlets in Yemen reported the seizure of the vessel and its 5-member crew who were transferred to Sanaa for questioning.
